Across the Globe, We Are United in Our Dedication to Women’s Rights
About us
South London African Women Association (SLAWA) survives mainly on people’s donations and we have the support of Croydon Council. Our main support has always been New Life Christian Centre (NLCC). They have been supplying us with clothing, school uniforms and equipment and shoes, which then we distribute to mothers in need.
SLAWA also distribute fresh, dry and canned food items in the community. We run a collection service and for those who cannot collect, the charity has its own delivery service. NLCC food bank is also opened to SLAWA, making it impossible to run out food supply.
SLAWA carries out home visits to many refugees in hostels. Also to the sick and pregnant women in hospitals. We provide them with moral support through prayers including food, clothing and other necessities.
We help Asylum seekers with housing, translation and guide them throughout their Home Office visa application, we also help them with their weekly shopping because many refugees cannot do their own shopping due to language barrier.
SLAWA provides French and English classes, cookery, sawing classes and homework club. We extend our services to elderly who are socially isolated by meeting with them twice a week. They can access our English lessons if interested to encourage social interaction.
In 2010, SLAWA started a rescue home for women on streets in the Congo. We managed to send substantial aids when 2012 horrific blast happened in Brazzaville. During the Covid Pandemic we provided endless food boxes to needy families. The Majority of food was donated by NLCC.
